Out of the millions of people who read this site (well, almost), I don’t know how many run their own site, and of those people, how many host with Dreamhost. Nevertheless, I’m currently hosting with Dreamhost, and the last couple of weeks have been driving me crazy.
I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but my site has been intermittently down. I haven’t changed/uploaded anything in over a month, so it’s not me. The odd thing is, if I login to my Dreamhost panel, click to “edit” rpheath.com, not change a thing, then click the “Change fully hosted settings now” button, the site comes back alive—but only for a little bit. That, in itself, is annoying. However, lately my panel has been in and out, so sometimes I cannot get to it to “refresh” my server. There’s not much to be said on the status page, but is anyone else having Dreamhost issues lately?

a site that I host @ dreamhost has been experiencing the same issues for 4 days or so.

Sorry to hear that, but I’m glad it’s not just me. It seems like it could be database issues, because I also have trouble connecting to my database through phpMyAdmin (even when the panel is working). Either way, I hope it’s fixed soon.

I’ve been having issues, too. So has Chris. I go crazy when I can’t read my dailies! :-p

Yeah, I’m getting pretty sick of Dreamhost’s crappy uptime. My site just doesn’t seem to stay online. It’s definitely not a database thing for me, though, because I’m using sqlite3. I may need to switch at some point (my current plan is up in June I think). I want to find a decently priced host that uses mongrel+mod_proxy perhaps as I’ve had good results with that (slate is running on a cluster of mongrel services).

@Nick: Tell me about it. Let me know if you hear/read anything that’s causing this nonsense.
@Chris: I was thinking you had already switched awhile back. It’s such a hassle to switch hosting (I like to have the domains registered with the host, too). And I feel like I’d be taking another chance, as I’ve only been with Dreamhost (for RoR) so far. I don’t know much about mongrel+mod_proxy—do you do much of the server maintenance with your job?

I have had to change and configure apache and Windows services, though not too often. Dave at work takes care of most of that configuration.
By the way, you need to change your 500 error to something more appropriate like “I hate Dreamhost – they broke my site again” :-p

That’s funny you’ve mentioned that—someone asked me today “what did you break?” And I said I was changing it to “Dreamhost has ruined my site.” I forgot it even comes up. I have 1/10 of the patience it would take to wait 2 minutes before that error page.
