Welcoming 2010
I’m just going to give a list of what I’m interested in right now, under the assumption that those things will carry on well into the new year. So, here goes:
Generally Speaking…
Reading. Reading is a lot more enjoyable and convenient having a Kindle. I’m hoping to read more fiction than I currently do. No need to be so serious all the time, right?
The Gym. I’ve been going to the gym 3-4 times a week for the last 6 weeks or so, and I’m desperately hoping that continues well into 2010. We’ll see.
Home Improvements. We’re currently in the process of finishing our downstairs, so that should be wrapped up within a couple of months. I’ve learned a ton doing the work ourselves. I guess web applications aren’t the only thing I like to build!
Golf. This is an ever-increasing hobby of mine, and I hope to play no less than once a week starting around the end of March. That’s an aggressive (and expensive) goal, I know.
Technically Speaking…
Ruby. This has been the case for years now, but worth listing nonetheless.
Rails. Again, an obvious one. But I’m most excited about Rails 3. The changes I’ve seen thus far are incredible, and I’m anxious for more. I especially love the new AR DSL.
jQuery. I’ve only increased my love for javascript, and I think I owe that to the great API and slickness that is jQuery.
key/value stores and document-driven databases. This will be the year I go chest deep in this stuff. It seems that this could be the first real relational-database killer. Exciting stuff.
HTML5. This is coming on faster than I originally thought, so I’ll be taking a much closer look at the spec sooner than later.
It’s now safe to say 2009 was a good year. And overall, 2010 is looking to be pretty solid, too. Hopefully I’m right. Either way, Happy New Year!
